The Annapurna Base Camp area is often referred to as a "sanctuary" due to its natural serenity and beauty. It is believed to be inhabited by the Hindu goddesses Annapurna and Gangapurna. The trek to Annapurna Base Camp follows the Modi Khola, a river that flows through a deep gorge. The route carves through the mountains between Machhapuchhre and Hiunchuli, leading to the isolated cirque of peaks.
