Role Responsibilities
Strategy, Advocacy and Leadership
Develop regional and national advocacy strategies in collaboration with IDC members and stakeholders across Africa.
Guide members and stakeholders in designing and implementing national advocacy strategies to reduce immigration detention, promote rights-based alternatives, and expand legal pathways.
Engage in strategic advocacy at national, regional and global levels, ensuring coordination across all levels.
Collaborate with the communications team to share updates through reports, written outputs, and social/digital media.
Contribute to the design and execution of IDC’s overall organisational strategy.
Relationships, Representation and Networking
Build and strengthen networks with governments, UN agencies, civil society, and community leaders, including those with lived detention experience.
Share resources, knowledge, and learning with members and partners.
Represent IDC in regional forums, events, and exchanges.
Facilitate peer-learning and collaborative initiatives with grassroots and community-based organisations.
Support the development of a network of leaders with lived detention experience.
Expertise
Maintain updated knowledge of detention practices, alternatives, and migration issues in Africa and globally.
Contribute to policy consultations, reviews, and standards development.
Lead or support IDC-led research and mapping projects.
Develop policy, training, and communication materials to strengthen advocacy.
Project Development, Fundraising and Management
Develop and deliver project proposals and events at national and regional levels.
Identify funding opportunities, build donor relationships, and contribute to proposals and applications.
Manage project budgets in collaboration with colleagues.
Coordinate recruitment of regional staff, consultants, and interns when needed.
Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation
Develop and track work plans, activities, and outcomes.
Ensure alignment of regional, national, and global initiatives.
Lead monitoring and reporting for funders and contribute to organisational evaluation and learning processes.
Support team-wide learning and external evaluations.

Key Selection Criteria
Essential
Strong track record in advocacy with senior policymakers in Africa.
Proven ability to design and implement impactful strategies with stakeholders.
Experience in building and sustaining networks with key actors and community groups.
Demonstrated expertise in policy analysis and strategic thinking.
In-depth knowledge of issues affecting refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants, particularly in detention contexts.
Commitment to promoting migrant and refugee leadership.
Experience designing and delivering training for government and civil society.
Demonstrated fundraising success and donor engagement.
Excellent communication skills, fluent in spoken and written English.
Ability to work independently, manage competing deadlines, and remain flexible.
Strong organisational and IT skills, including digital media.
Ability and willingness to travel within Africa.
Based in the Africa region.
Desirable
Fluency in additional languages.
Strong network among private or philanthropic funders.
Experience working in a transnational civil society network.
